With less than a week till Nametapes direct opens for business we thought it was the right time to answer what is probably our most asked question, “what Nametapes should I buy?” In the beginning there was only one type of Nametape which was a Woven label introduced in the UK in the 1870's and was sewn into all items of clothing, but now days there are Iron-on, sew-in, plastic tags and even some name labels which are self adhesive and claim to stay on for many washes, so which work best?
Predominantly sewn in, however a few vendors offer them with an Iron On backing are still around some 140 years latter and clearly do the job, but the disadvantage is that they have to be woven and depending on the company you get them from vary considerably in quality and price, they need to be sewn on to the garment at both ends so essentially there are 2 lots of sewing per name tag and finally there is normally just enough room for the name and a small icon on the tape. But no one can argue that if the time is spent to sew them in carefully they will stay on the garment for years.
Often called School Name tapes these labels have had some bad press! Heavily marketed in the 1960's as a strip of Iron on material and a pen they worked with varying degrees of success some staying on the term and some dropping off on the first wash. Now days things have changed, Iron on labels available from Nametapes direct can be relied upon to stay on for the life of the garment, however the application instructions do need to be followed closely and Iron on labels will allow you to have more information on them than a Woven Tag and be quicker to apply than sewing. The modern equivalent to the Woven nametape the sew-in name tag has far more room for content than woven labels by virtue of the fact it is a loop-fold design not only giving you 2 surfaces on which information can be displayed but also meaning that there is only one row of sewing. Because these labels have so much room they are a firm favourite with allergy sufferers because they can have allergy or medical advice printed on the back with the sufferers name on the front. The plastic tags are becoming more popular, they are simply a way of attaching a name label to the school uniform or garment without ironing or sewing, they are fast to apply but can be easily removed which is either a good or a bad thing, Great if your handing the clothes down but not so good if a thief simply pulls them off.
